Fold View Interactions

This article outlines different uses of the Fold View in Author and Reader (which is technically the same for both applications on pinch but shows different text below headings and is also used for the Find view). The changes are brief for Author (show headings in Find view and show bold text, citations and named entities in fold view), this is primarily to describe Reader interactions:

Authoring

Fold View on Cmd-f

Authoring is about putting down coherent sentences in a document and editing them and seeing what you have written to see what needs to be expanded upon etc. In order to serve this use users of Author are able to select any text and cmd-f to see only (full) sentences with that text, as well as any headings above them so that the user can see the context. Users can also pinch to fold the document into an outline (which will be editable soon).

They will also, soon, see any bolded text and any ‘named entities’ (as defined by the macOS ML library for this), but only the entities, not the full sentences as that would likely not be useful. Users will be able to pinch further in and out to change the level of reveal, as shown here. Note that within the outline view the user can smoothly change level but to return to the word processing view will require another pinch:

Level 1 Heading Only
Level 1 and 2 Headings
Level 1 to 3 Headings
Level 1 to 4 Headings
Level 1 to 5 Heading
Level 1 to 6 Heading
Level 1 to 6 Heading + bold text
Level 1 to 6 Heading + bold text + citations
Level 1 to 6 Heading + bold text + citations + named entities

Reading

Fold view on Cmd-f

While reading the user can select text and cmd-f to see the same as if in Author and pinch in.

User can also start writing and this turns into a search once the second letter is entered. The search result appears in the same view as always with the search text on top, where the search text is always shown, but in this mode the user can keep typing.

Jump to Page

If the user types a number, the application opens to that page.

Fold view on Pinch In

The same Fold View as in Author with the following changes to augment reading rather than authorship:

Level 1 Heading Only
Level 1 and 2 Headings
Level 1 to 3 Headings
Level 1 to 4 Headings
Level 1 to 5 Heading
Level 1 to 6 Heading
Level 1 to 6 Heading + citations
Level 1 to 6 Heading + citations + highlighted/annotated
Level 1 to 6 Heading + citations + highlighted/annotated + named entities

Study View

The user can also select text and raise it into a study view (name to be decided on). The interaction is select any text and the text and on spacebar the text will be lifted into a full screen view with breaks on , and double breaks on . (As well as other rules). The user can select text here to annotate as well as use with Liquid Flow and ESC or click ‘Exit’ at the bottom to return to the regular PDF view.

Spacebar without selecting text goes down/further one page.

Character to Highlight

User can select text and easily highlight by doing cmd-r for red, cmd-y for yellow, cmd-b for blue and cmd-g for green (also work without cmd but slower, since the system will check if a second letter is coming and then it does a search, as above). These are also available in the ctrl-click menu, along with Find.
