Discussions on the Dynamic View layout & toggle (& start of project work)

Jacob and I discussed the basic, minimum implementation of the dynamic view for my PhD research and paused a few items for the regular Author release, including live links in PDF and Word export and keeping TOC improvements and a few other things.

The issue we discussed was how to provide a means for entering the dynamic view space (Dynamic View is the final name for this, it will not be called Liquid View and it will be inside Author, not a separate application) and then how to toggle into a time line view: User should be able to somehow choose this “time” view and also choose a completely manual mode.

BTW, the line shows citation and a rotation gesture in and out to zoom time in and out.

So, here is a screenshot from the call and solutions are below. This is based on shipping the bare-bones version of this view for my PhD work, as I said above, without glossary support etc.:


The Timeline View

Here the cited documents are laid out automatically by their publication date on the x axis and by author on their y axis. The user should be able to specify easily what’s on each axis and to toggle in and out of this mode and the freeform mode.

We thought about adding a pop-up on the bottom title bar but decided it was too ‘clicky’ and not gesture based enough:

When thinking about how I work in image applications I felt that swiping from the side would make sense, for a pallet/toolbar/options in both macOS and iOS so we will keep the pinch for major view toggles but have swipe in on the left side to toggle different dynamic view Layouts, starting with just freeform and timeline but hoping to add magnetic and saved layouts, and on the right what to show, in the category of elements/nodes, connections and how to arrange by x and y axis:

I am very pleased with this solution, I think it can feel quite natural for the user. Finally, a screenshot it real Author colours:
