Making PDFs safe and useful

I have a bunch of PDFs of Doug Engelbart’s writing with I would like to read, annotate (& later search), take care of and cite in a high resolution capacity where the reader can access the original document and the original position within the document. This is not easy.

When referring to an academic document the current practice is to put the old fashioned name, date, publisher and that kind of information plus perhaps a DOI but there is no facility for linking to a specific ‘page’ or section and the links are not to the documents, they are to download portals, thereby reducing the actual follow-through of clicking on a PDF.

I think that we should look at the Rich PDF notion and more, to allow these legacy document formats to really power knowledge work.
