Human thought has levels of abstraction which become concrete in writing. Therefore I ask, what is the most effective visual workspace for extended cognition? As the occipital lobe augments the prefrontal cortex by using the expanding the mental space to what the eyes can see, so does the left cerebral hemisphere, where learnt behaviour is encoded, augment the ability of the right hemisphere, which deals with novel situations. In other words; a user trained in the software can use visualisations more effectively. An early statement in my PhD journey was the emphasis on Doug Engelbart’s emphasis not only on views, but on flexible views–it should be quick and easy to switch between views.
