Linear Views

The word processing view is the main writing view and also the most traditional. Here are subsets of that view:

Find (cmd-f)

The purpose of the Find view to show the occurrence of specified text in their sentences in the document and should therefore show headings as well (maybe including headings with no results–we should test that). In other words, this view is the same as the Outline view but shows sentences with specified keywords as well.

Outline (pinch in)

  • Click on a heading to instantly fold the document back open and hoist that heading to the top of the screen
  • Pinch in and out to real more or less heading levels
  • Pinch all the way out to return to word processing view
  • Click and hold to move headings up and down and indent them through moving or arrow keys or tab/shift-tab
  • ‘+’ at the end of the list allows user to add a new heading at level 1 and drag it to where they want it or ‘enter’ to leave it at the end
  • Level 6 is less a heading than a highlighter. This level only bolds the text and does not need nor require line breaks before or after it
  • It should be possible to perform a search in this view by doing cmd-t and typing a search term

Flow (pinch-out on selected text) NEW

The purpose of Flow is to make heavy paragraphs easier to read and edit.

The user selects text and pinches out and the selected (or full document if text was not selected, requiring a stop when going from Outline to body before going into this mode) breaks on . and ; and : (Further rules will be copied from Copy/As Flow in Liquid Flow so that it does not break multiple times on ellipsis or on etc.).

In terms of robust logic we need to know if it should be based on some sort of token replacement or simply act in reverse on reverse command and whether it should be full document, paragraph (based on cursor or part-selection) or selected text based. My initial feeling is that it should be selection based and have double click stay for selecting a word, triple click to select sentence and quadruple click to select paragraph (with some leeway with speed).

Example Before

By “augmenting human intellect” we mean increasing the capability of a man to approach a complex problem situation, to gain comprehension to suit his particular needs, and to derive solutions to problems. Increased capability in this respect is taken to mean a mixture of the following: more-rapid comprehension, better comprehension, the possibility of gaining a useful degree of comprehension in a situation that previously was too complex, speedier solutions, better solutions, and the possibility of finding solutions to problems that before seemed insoluble. And by “complex situations” we include the professional problems of diplomats, executives, social scientists, life scientists, physical scientists, attorneys, designers — whether the problem situation exists for twenty minutes or twenty years. We do not speak of isolated clever tricks that help in particular situations. We refer to a way of life in an integrated domain where hunches, cut-and-try, intangibles, and the human “feel for a situation” usefully coexist with powerful concepts, streamlined terminology and notation, sophisticated methods, and high-powered electronic aids.

Focus (double-click on heading) NEW

The purpose of Focus is to provide a smaller works space for a focused workspace since it can be daunting to author a long document in one file so some authors have one document per section. We want to have a way which the author hide all sections except the one being written in and edited. It’s not that hard to do this technically but the user interaction needs to make it clear what is happening and it should be easy to go into and out of this mode. It is important to remember this application is for authoring and not for reading so it should support editing functions and navigation/views for that purpose, not annotation and reading of unknown material.

Toggle to Focus only works in word processor view (does not make sense to activate from outline) by double-clicking on a heading which results in the heading hoisting up to the top of the screen, horizontally centred, with a line under it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BM1dBR2GXpA&feature=youtu.be (It is the same as the basic line under all Author pages, or we have a way to make sure there is never a part-chopped off line of text on top of the screen, as we had in Author a long time ago, in previous incarnations). Click on this heading or ESC to return to full/basic word processing view.
